The sleuths over at Us Magazine have confirmed that the MTV Movie Awards did in fact stage the incident where Bruno landed on Eminem (the soon-to-be Meg Ryan romantic comedy vehicle, "When Bruno's Butt Cheeks Met Eminem's Face"). The head MTV Awards writer Scott Aukerman tells Us, "Yes, the Eminem-Bruno incident was staged. They rehearsed it at dress [rehearsal] and yes, it went as far as it did on the live show."
Since Sunday night, it seemed that every website, blog, Twitter account, and Facebook status update was going nuts after "the incident," speculating whether this was real or not. Really, guys?
Sacha Baron Cohen may be known for pulling crazy stunts, but this is the MTV Movie Awards we're talking about here. Every sneeze has been carefully written, choreographed, rehearsed, passed through publicists, agents, managers, stylists, psychics, then very slowly and clearly explained to the stars involved.
Let's look at the facts, here. The live show happened to cut to a shot of Eminem looking up at Cohen while he was ever-so-precariously dangling, and the cameras were ready at the landing. And when Eminem "stormed out" of the theater, he seemed to be magically amplified (as if by a microphone) while the geniuses in the censorship department somehow managed to live-bleep his expletives (pretty high-tech).
And at this point, Cohen isn't exactly under-the-radar enough to be pranking anyone successfully outside of backwoods folks who've never owned a TV (excepting, of course, Paula Abdul).
While Eminem has been slammed for being homophobic in the past, he was here to promote his new album, so I can't imagine that if this indeed had been a magic twist of fate, he would have responded the way he did. Instead, the anger just would have been channeled directly toward MTV and Sacha Baron Cohen's teams of lawyers. And we think Sacha's are a little backlogged with Borat class-actions.
Alright, guys. MTV, Sacha, and Eminem all worked together on this. Let's all breathe a collective sigh of relief, and go back to watching some true real-life drama on "The Hills."
