Just two weeks after winning a special election in New York's Nassau County — flipping a seat that had been under Republican control — Rep. Tom Suozzi was sworn in to the House of Representatives on Feb. 28. The seat had been occupied by the notorious George Santos before his ouster for alleged financial crimes last December, marking just the sixth time in U.S. history that a sitting member of the House of Representatives was expelled.
Tom's victory cut into the GOP's already razor-thin House majority.
After House Speaker Mike Johnson swore in Tom, the new representative had critical words for his fellow lawmakers, saying both major political parties are being "bullied" by their bases on issues like inflation and "the chaos at the border."
"Wake up!" the Democrat told the House chamber in an impassioned speech. "The people are sick and tired of finger-pointing and petty partisan politics."
