Thomas Markle, who is said to be "fighting for his life," is currently in the hospital in the Philippines after he had his left lower leg amputated. For now, Meghan Markle is staying put in California.

The U.S. State Department warned citizens about traveling to the Philippines due to "crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping."
"Terrorists and armed groups have carried out kidnappings, bombings and other attacks targeting public areas. Violent crimes are also common in the Philippines," the U.S. State Department said in a statement.

Over the years, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have spoken about their security concerns, which is one of the reasons the duchess hasn't returned to the U.K.
"Given the extremely dangerous instability there, Meghan has accepted the risk factor is just too great to even contemplate any kind of in-person reunion with her dad right now," the source shared.

Though Meghan Markle didn't fly to Asia to see Thomas Markle, her rep said her handwritten letter to her dad was delivered "through reliable and trusted contacts."
