LONDON (AP) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown says the country's strong showing at the Academy Awards proves the U.K. film industry is leading the world.

Brown says he is "incredibly proud" of the country's successes, which include eight Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire" and a best actress award for Kate Winslet.

Brown said Monday that British creative industries were world-beaters "as a result of the great talent that we have."

The British-funded, India-set "Slumdog" won awards including best picture and best director for Danny Boyle.

Brown said the movie had captured the imagination of people all over the world.
