NEW YORK (AP) — Diane Sawyer says ABC wants to do more than simply report on the gang violence in Chicago.
She says the network hopes to explore through reports Thursday and Friday whether some way can be found to reduce the killing, by letting viewers know some of the people involved or caught in the crossfire.
The "Hidden America" report is planned for Thursday and Friday on "World News" and in a special edition of "Nightline" airing Friday night.
Chicago has reported more than 400 homicides this year. A top elected official wants a tax of a nickel for each bullet and $25 for each firearm sold in the county encompassing Chicago and estimates it could generate $1 million annually.
ABC helped organize a community meeting that brought together 38 present and former gang members to talk about the violence.
