George Clooney has sent protesters in the Ukraine a pre-Christmas video message, wishing them success in their bid to persuade President Viktor Yanukovych to sign a treaty with the European Union.

Citizens in the country have been gathering outside the leader's official residence in Kiev since November 21, after Yanukovych announced plans to strengthen ties with Russia instead of making the popular move among his people.

Police have attempted to cracked down on the crowds, but the number of protesters continues to grow -- and now they have caught Clooney's attention and "The Descendants" star has released a video in support of them.

In the recorded message he says, "We here in the United States have great affinity for those seeking democracy. We learned through trial and error that true democracy cannot exist without a free and fair and honest election. You cannot have a democracy when you arrest and harm its peaceful protesters. ... When you look to the West, know that we are looking back at you with great admiration. We wish you a peaceful and safe mission. We wish you the government that you want, and we wish you the strength to carry on. Good luck."
