Keith Urban is awaiting his fate on American Idol. The 45-year-old country singer told the Associated Press that he's in the dark about whether he'll be returning as a judge on season 13 of the Fox singing competition show.
"I have no official information of anything. I'm pretty much in the same boat as everybody else here with the rumors that have been floating around," he said in a new interview on Tuesday, May 28. "I don't know anything more about what's happening next season. It was like this before I signed on . . . so it's not unusual for the Idol folks to be in this place of figuring out what they want to do, then they always pull it together."
Late last week, reports surfaced that the current judges would be replaced by past Idol contestants including Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson and either Adam Lambert or Clay Aiken. Veteran judge Randy Jackson announced May 9 that he's leaving the show, and an insider told Us Weekly earlier this month that Nicki Minaj will also be saying goodbye.
Urban and fellow judge Mariah Carey's involvement on the show remains unknown. (Urban, Minaj and Carey were all newcomers for season 12, replacing Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, who left last year.)
"I did as much as I could in the environment we had," Nicole Kidman's husband and father of two said. And he enjoyed working with the young Idol hopefuls. "I love artists," he explained. "I love the beginnings of artists when all they've got is raw talent and nothing else."
Whether he returns to American Idol or not, Urban has a different project to focus on: his new album, Fuse. The singer revealed Tuesday that he will release his ninth studio album on Sept. 10, and head out on tour in mid-July.
