Ariana Grande can't escape donut gate.

The 23-year-old "Into You" singer's donut licking scandal last summer became a topic of conversation during the 2016 MTV VMAs pre-show.

"Look, you can't go around here licking no pastries tonight," pre-show host Charlamagne Tha God told Ariana. She responded by nodding her head, "Okay, I'll take notes." He then repeated himself, and she said, "I'll keep it in mind."

But of course this was not the first time that Ariana had to address her memorable controversy. It all started back in July 2015 when she and her then-boyfriend Ricky Alvarez were caught licking donuts that she didn't pay for at the Wolfee Donuts in Lake Elsnore, California. TMZ released video footage, and in the video, she tells Ricky, "I hate Americans. I hate America."

After the backlash, Ariana apologized.

She told Good Morning America, "First of all, I mean my behavior was very offensive and I apologized. There is no excuse and there is nothing to justify it," she continued, "But you know, I think that as human beings we all say and do things that we don't mean at all sometimes and we have to learn from it. That's part of our process. We have to learn from our mistakes and that's how we grow."

When asked what she learned, she said, "I think one of the biggest things I learned from that is what it feels like to disappoint so many people who love and believe in you and that's an excruciating feeling and you have to remember your word, your actions have, you know, ramifications and you have to really think about what you're about to say and do because it's important."

Not only did Ariana have to talk about donuts, but she subtly addressed her new relationship with Mac Miller.

She told Charlamagne that she would "send [Miller] your regards."

When the host asked where Mac was, Ariana simply responded, "Being supportive. It's okay to be alone even when you have a boo."

Ariana and Mac's chemistry can be seen in the 2013 music video they collaborated on, "The Way."
