Jelly Roll lied to daughter's friends about face tattoos

Jelly Roll's many tattoos are a huge part of his whole persona — but when it comes to parenting young kids, the country artist's face tattoos have caused him a few troubles.

In an interview with Taste of Country, the "Need a Favor" singer explained what it was like taking his daughter Bailee Ann, now 17, to school when she was little.

"When she was in kindergarten, it was so funny because all of her little friends would go, 'What is all that stuff on your face?'" Jelly Roll said. "I would go 'You won't believe this, I only draw this on when I come see y'all so y'all are excited about it.'"

But even little kids aren't so easily fooled, and Bailee's friends soon began to question her dad's cover story.

"Finally, they were like, 'How do you draw it on the same way every time?'" Jelly recalled. "I said, 'I got the little sticker things now because I been coming so much.'"

While this is an adorable story, Jelly's face tattoos brought sadder complications with them, too. As Bailee grew up, her friends' parents began not wanting her friends to come to her house because of her dad's face tattoos.

The now super successful singer has been incredibly open about his difficult past, which included time in prison and using drugs.

As for the face tattoos, though, he recently told Men's Health that they no longer reflect who he is as a person. In fact, he says that people who think he has them for attention couldn't be more wrong.

"It's the polar opposite," he told the publication. "The way shame sometimes shows itself is not always the way we expect it to be. We think shame is somebody in the streets on their knees, with their head down. But shame sometimes is pride. Sometimes shame is just bravado. Behind real bravado, I can normally find shame. I can normally find guilt. I can normally find insecurity."

"I was the biggest, the loudest, the toughest, the meanest, the growliest, the fattest. There's normally deep inside of that a really, really small, insecure human. I was that, for sure. Then a by-product of that was I got fat as f***," he added.

On that last point, Jelly Roll has been on an incredible weight-loss journey over the past few months, which has been widely documented in the media and on his own social media. He opened up about this journey in Men's Health — including sharing his goal to be on the cover of Men's Health to inspire others. Mission: accomplished!
