Selena Gomez was serious when she announced in December that she was canceling her Australian tour to "spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be." On Wednesday, her rep confirmed reports that she spent two weeks of January in an Arizona rehab.
The Dawn at the Meadows facility offers youth-targeted treatment for addiction and other issues, but Selena, 21, didn't seek help for drugs or alcohol when she discreetly checked in on Jan. 5, says her camp.
"Selena voluntarily spent time at Meadows but not for substance abuse," her rep said in a statement.
But her on-off romance with a downward-spiraling Justin Bieber may have played a role in her decision to get treatment.
"Selena came to understand just what a bad influence Justin had been on her life," contends a Radar Online source. "Their relationship left her broken-hearted."
And while Radar says she sought help for "emotional issues," another insider alleges that she'd been "partying very hard."
According to TMZ, Gomez blames Bieber for her troubles, citing the "excesses" she was exposed to (e.g. alcohol, pot and Ambien) while hanging with him and his posse.
"It just got to a point where she needed to get out of Los Angeles, get away from 'the scene' and the pressures of Hollywood," explains a Radar spy, "[and] to also get away from those who had, admittedly, become a bad influence on her."
It's worth noting that Gomez headed to rehab just three days after she was spotted riding Segways with Bieber near his Calabasas, Calif., home. TMZ says her inner circle "went ballistic" with their renewed contact.
"Selena needed to take the opportunity to work on herself," adds the Radar source. "She realized she needed help."
An Us spy echoes that assertion, saying she needed to "get herself together."
Concludes a Radar confidante, "Selena is now happy and very healthy and already getting back to work."
