She oughta have known!

Despite dominating the music charts in the '90s, Alanis Morissette apparently hasn't been reaping all the benefits of her lucrative career.

TMZ is reporting that the musician was screwed out of $4.7 million of her earnings by her former business manager, according to the company where he worked. GSO Business Management employed her business manager Jonathan Schwartz, and recently discovered that he was stealing money for his opulent lifestyle.

Red flags were raised earlier this year, when Alanis fired Jonathan and started working with a new manager who realized large chunks of her money were missing. After the $4.7 million figure was discovered to be unaccounted for, Alanis threatened to sue the business management company GSO and wanted her former business manager to be liable for the missing money.

When GSO confronted their former employee and partner, Jonathan concocted a pretty crazy story about the money's whereabouts. He claimed that Alanis told him to withdraw the sum in order to invest in a marijuana growing business, and he did as the star asked and gave the money to her reps.

Unfortunately for the former business manager, Jonathan's tall tale doesn't check out. Alanis denied ever asking for money to invest into the marijuana business.

As for where that money ended up? A current lawsuit claims that Jonathan stole it to help fund his lavish life. A $50,000 vacation to Bora Bora and a $75,000 gambling debt he owed in the Bahamas are among the big ticket items the business manager allegedly paid for with dough from Alanis.

Jonathan also handled stars like Beyonce and Mariah Carey... so it sounds like they might want to take a good look at their funds!

As for Alanis, despite some financial drama the singer's life is in pretty good shape. Just last year the singer celebrated the 20 year anniversary of the release of her hit album "Jagged Little Pill" last year with a four-disc collector's edition. In her personal life, Alanis is happily married to rapper Mario "Souleye" Treadway, with whom she shares one son, Ever, and is currently pregnant with their second child.
