Megan Rapinoe has always spoken her mind — for better or for worse — and she's now raising eyebrows after saying that a career-ending injury is proof that God doesn't exist.
The statement came after the two-time World Cup winner suffered a "devastating" injury over the weekend in the last match of her celebrated career. Although it hasn't been confirmed, Megan believes she tore her Achilles tendon. In speaking of the injury, which occurred just a few minutes into her final match, Megan used some "dark humor" to cope with her emotions.

Megan Rapinoe told the press after she suffered a painful injury during the final match of her career, "I'm not a religious person or anything and if there was a God, this is proof that there isn't. This is f***ed up."
The gold medal-winning Olympian was taken off the field after she felt a "huge pop."
"For sure, I tore my Achilles," she said, calling it "the worst possible outcome."

Megan Rapinoe used some self-deprecating humor to describe her final game, during which she suffered a painful injury.
"I wasn't overly emotional about it. I mean, f***ing yeeted my Achilles in the sixth minute in my last game ever in the literal championship game. I guess I just rode until the wheels came right off," she said. "Now I'm just a NARP, a normal-a** regular person, having to do rehab which is f***ing devastating. You gotta find the silver lining and the dark humor, and that's just who I am as well."

Megan Rapinoe — who's widely considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time — has often voiced support for LGBTQ+ rights, pay equity and the Black Lives Matter movement. While speaking to media before the 2019 World Cup, she was asked about her critics.
"I think I'm particularly and uniquely and very deeply American," she said. "If we want to talk about the ideals that we stand for, the song and the [national] anthem, and what we were founded on. I think I'm extremely American."
"I know that I'm not perfect. But I think that I stand for honesty and for truth and for wanting to have the conversation. Looking at the country honestly and saying, yes, we are a great country, and there are many things that are so amazing and I feel very fortunate to be in this country. I would never be able to do this in a lot of other places," she said. "But also: that doesn't mean we can't get better. It doesn't mean we shouldn't always strive to be better. I think that this country was founded on a lot of good ideals but it was also founded on slavery. And I think we just need to be really honest about that and be really open in talking about that so we can reconcile that and hopefully move forward and make this country better for everyone."

TV journalist Megyn Kelly has been one of Megan Rapinoe's biggest critics over the years. After the USWNT lost in the 2023 World Cup — not long after Megan announced her plans to retire — the former Fox News host ripped the soccer star and claimed the team, as a whole, "hates" America. She then accused Megan — who has represented the U.S. in four World Cups and two Olympic Games — of influencing her teammates' perspectives.
"This [team behavior] is clearly, I think, a result of her influence, and it's disgusting," Megyn said on her podcast. "What an incredible opportunity to stand out there, representing the United States of America in World Cup soccer, and you can't be shamed into at least feigning a touch of patriotism… We're disgusting, I guess, when it comes to human rights. This is what people like Rapinoe have said in the past. So we can't be saluted in any way."
