On March 30, Isla Fisher paid tribute to her father on Instagram while also posting a black-and-white photo of him. Isla's dad looks dapper and sported a mustache and shaggy hair.
"This is my dad, Poppa Fish," she said. "I love him, he's the greatest and I am so thankful to have him in my life."
But, after the post, fans immediately felt that they saw a resemblance to a fictional character close to Isla's heart.
"The original Borat," one person said, as many others echoed similar sentiments, such as "Borat Sr."
On April 1, the actress laughed when she was asked directly if her dad was the real-life inspiration for Borat, a character created by her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen.
"My father has also dabbled in many types of facial hair. He's grown a long beard, a short beard, you know, sideburns, no sideburns, a handlebar mustache, pencil thin mustache," she said during an interview on The Project. "He's definitely rocked many looks over the ages."
Many of Isla's 1.8 million followers felt that her father also resembled drug lord Pablo Escobar. The "Wedding Crashers" star, though, sees more of her favorite fictional Kazakhstan citizen in her dad, but notes that it's merely a coincidence.
"You're right," she said, "in that [Instagram] photo it does seem like it's a nod to that character. But no, he's just a very dapper gent expressing himself."
Isla's dad, it seems, is not "Borat" the prequel.
