Ruby Rose had to forgo her batsuit because of a case of cat scratch fever, it turns out.
On July 13, the actress revealed that an allergic reaction to her costume forced her to pull out of her gig on The CW's "Batwoman."
"I did find out that I was allergic to latex… and unfortunately my mask is latex," she told The Kyle and Jackie O Show. "I was like, 'I'm a little itchy!' And it was getting worse and worse, because as you get more contact with it, I guess you get more reactions."
She added, "I took [it] off at the end and my whole face was just hives."
Prior to this, Ruby had been vague about her reason for leaving the show. In May 2020, she announced her departure, she said, "I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season. This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles."
In October 2020, while on Sirius XM's The Jess Cagle Show, she spoke of undergoing surgery for two herniated discs. Because of her health and the COVID-19 pandemic, the show exit seemed "like the right thing to do," she said.
Ruby's role was eventually turned over to Wallis Day.
"Super excited to finally announce I'm joining the cast of Batwoman," she wrote on Instagram at the time. "I'm sure you can imagine how much this means to me and how incredible it's been working on the show so far."
"It's a huge responsibility stepping into the shoes of a character that's already been established and it's a journey I'm looking forward to being a part of and hoping you guys do too," she continued. "Everyone's made me feel so welcome and it's amazing being back home with my DC family."
