Donald Trump admitted Lara Trump is his "first choice" for the role once Thom Tillis retires. However, the former pastry chef is Florida-based and hasn't lived in North Carolina for years. "Somebody that would really be great is Lara, she grew up there," Trump told reporters while on Air Force One when asked about who should replace Tillis. "They have a very good life, and they, you know, they're great people," he continued. "She did fantastically running the RNC. She's even got a show [Fox News' My View with Lara Trump] that's like the No. 1 show." (The Five is Fox News' most-watched show.)

Lara Trump co-chaired the RNC from March 2024 to January 2025, and her father-in-law is proud of her work. "She's done well," Donald Trump said. "She's a great person, Lara Trump. I mean, that would always be my first choice, but she doesn't live there now – but she's there all the time. … Her parents are there. She really knows North Carolina well."

While Lara Trump is no longer the co-chair of the RNC, she did address her political future in a recent interview. "A lot of people probably remember I've considered kind of running for or filling a Senate seat, now, this would be the third time,"
she said. "The first time was actually during the midterms in '22.
Ted Budd ultimately ran for the GOP and won that Senate seat there in North Carolina. And then obviously
Marco Rubio in Florida, vacating his Senate seat to become our incredible secretary of state."

X users reacted to Donald Trump seemingly endorsing Lara Trump for the Senate seat. "First, it was interest in running for Senator in Florida, and now North Carolina. Does she truly want to represent those states, or represent the self-interest of the Grifter-in-Chief?" one X user wrote. An X user on the other side of the aisle wrote, "I support Lara running. She's smart, has name recognition, definitely MAGA… I'd campaign with her. If she wants it…"
