Not cool. African-American actress Daniele Watts was handcuffed in Studio City, Calif., on Thursday, Sept. 11, after kissing her husband Brian James Lucas, who is white, in public.
The couple both took to Facebook, posting several pictures, to express their frustrations over the incident, which resulted in Watts being thrown into the back of a cop car and cutting her wrist on the handcuffs.
"Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place," the actress, who currently stars as Martin Lawrence's daughter on FX's "Partners," wrote on Facebook.
Watt's husband also wrote a long post, explaining what he felt were the officers' motives behind his wife's arrest.
"From the questions that he asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client)," Lucas wrote. "So they handcuffed her and threw her roughly into the back of the cop car until they could figure out who she was. In the process of handcuffing her, they cut her wrist, which was truly NOT COOL!!! Of course, they had to let her go eventually cuz we weren't a threat to anyone."
Variety reached out to the LAPD, and a public information officer said that there was no record of the incident as the actress wasn't officially arrested or brought into the station for questioning.
