Nine years after entering into a civil partnership, Elton John and David Furnish officially married in a private ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 21. John posted pictures to his Instagram to share moments of the special day with the hashtag "ShareTheLove."
He started out with a photo of the "legal bit," which shoes them signing marriage paperwork.
On Dec. 10, Parliament made it legal to convert civil partnerships into marriages in the United Kingdom. John, 67, and Furnish, 52, decided to take advantage of the change in legislation. They were one of the first couples to enter into a civil partnership in 2005 at the Windsor Guildhall. Now, after being together for over 20 years, they were able to exchange their vows in front of a registrar and their family and friends to become husbands.
Guests included soccer player David and Victoria Beckham's family. Their son Brooklyn Beckham shared a photo with his mom and congratulated his uncles.
After the ceremony, guests dined on a lunch of beef short rib, caramelized onion pie, roasted potatoes, parsnips in horseradish butter and desserts of warm chocolate pudding, vanilla ice cream and wedding cake.
The red roses on the table matched their invitation, and John says red roses have brought them "so much luck" as they also had them when they entered into a civil partnership.
The couple began their relationship in 1993. John told Parade Magazine in 2010 about how they met. "I went back to my house in Windsor for a while. I wanted meet new people so I rang up a friend in London and said, 'Could you please rattle some new people together for dinner here Saturday?'" John said. "[David] was very well dressed, very shy. The next night we had dinner. After it, we consummated our relationship. We fell in love very quickly."
John and Furnish have two sons, Zachary, 3, and Elijah, 1.
