It was over a year in the making, but Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas are on the verge of officially divorcing.
According to TMZ, both Melanie and Antonio have now signed the necessary legal papers to end their nearly 20-year marriage. All that's left is for a judge to sign off on the matter, which is merely a formality at this point.
In the beginning of the divorce proceedings, Melanie was asking for full custody of their daughter Stella and also wanted spousal support. However, since then, Stella has turned 18 so the custody issue took care of itself.
This is Melanie's fourth divorce; it's Antonio's second divorce.
The former couple shocked nearly everyone when they announced their separation in June 2014.
In a statement, the couple said, "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost 20-year marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family, and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together."
Shortly after the divorce, Melanie covered up her famous heart tattoo of her then-husband's name.
"There was no cheating on either side. They had fallen out of love a while ago," a source said at the time of the split. "Their daughter Stella is about to be 18 in September and they wanted to wait until [the] kids were grown and out of the house before they split up, but knew they would a while ago. They stayed together for the sake of the kids."
The duo recently reunited for their daughter's graduation.
