Tom Gabel, the singer from the punk band Against Me!, is transgender, and will soon begin the process of becoming a woman by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis, he tells Rolling Stone.

Gabel, 31, tells the magazine that he has dealt with gender dysphoria for years; he will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace and will remain wed to wife Heather.

"For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," Gabel says. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

The first major rock star to come out as transgender, the singer had only told a select group of family and friends before breaking the news to Rolling Stone.

"I'm going to have embarrassing moments," says Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
