A third party would "inevitably become a spoiler for the major party that most closely aligns with their views," Jen Psaki noted. "Elon Musk just spent the last six months taking a hatchet to the federal government and making an enemy of Democratic voters basically everywhere," she said on the Thursday, July 9, episode of her MSNBC show. "So it's really hard to see how a new political party born of that legacy would attract any left-leaning voters to his cause."

Elon Musk posted a poll on X asking followers to vote on whether or not they'd want a third party, and while the post received a significant response, Jen Psaki noted that it wasn't a formal test or legitimate collection of data. "Musk has cited his own unscientific X poll that found 80% of respondents want to see a new party. But actual polling finds that 80% of voters in both parties think rich donors like Elon Musk have too much influence in politics," she said. "They don't need more, which may be part of why Musk himself is viewed negatively by a majority of a majority of Americans"

Elon Musk's desire to start a new political party followed his public fallout with Donald Trump after the tech tycoon publicly criticized the president's "One Big, Beautiful Bill." Said Jen Psaki, "Does he want a new party because his efforts to buy one of the two major parties hasn't worked out the way he thought it would? Maybe. Or maybe it's just a vanity project to get the world's most insecure billionaire some attention."

In an X post, Elon Musk seemingly shaded Donald Trump and his administration by suggesting both Democrats and Republicans are failing the American people. "By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it," he wrote. "When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste [and] graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."

Wonderwall previously reported how Donald Trump reacted to Elon Musk's third party ambitions. "I think it's ridiculous to start a third party," the president told reporters on Sunday, July 6. "We have a tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it's always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion. … It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked. So, he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous."
