In July 2024, President Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when an attempt was made on his life. Ron Johnson, chairman of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, is asking the FBI to release security camera footage that could show the movements of the failed assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, before the shooting. He's also seeking ballistics, bullet trajectory and drone analysis reports from the bureau.

In a statement, Ron Johnson said, "One year following the assassination attempt of President Donald Trump, the American people still do not have answers to all of their questions about the breakdown of security at the Butler campaign rally and detailed information about the would-be assassin, Thomas Crooks."

Ron Johnson is also pursuing information related to Thomas Matthew Crooks' including social media profiles, email accounts, internet search history and call logs. "I had expected the FBI to be more forthcoming with the public and provide my office with the records we have been seeking for months," the senator said. "I am issuing the subpoena to help prompt transparency and I look forward to [FBI Director Kash Patel's] full cooperation."
