Kristin Kreuk is kicking butt and taking names on her new CW series Beauty and the Beast.

Starring as homicide detective Catherine Chandler, Smallville veteran Kreuk, 29, is able to put her childhood martial arts training to good use as she teams up with Tess Vargas (Nurse Jackie) to investigate the death of doctor Vincent Keller, whom they later discover is actually alive.

While some actresses would scoff at having to do their own stunts, Kreuk welcomes the adrenaline-pumping scenes, including one in which she fends off a knife-wielding attacker in a subway station.

"I started doing martial arts when I was a kid, and I can pull from [those skills on the show]," the Canadian actress told reporters at a Beauty and the Beast press panel prior to the premiere. "I don't often get that kind of role, so [doing martial arts] periodically is a lot of fun for me."
