Meghan Markle's homemade snacks might just break the bank, as food writer
Silvana Franco discovered when she attempted to
recreate the recipe for British crisps that the Duchess of Sussex made with Michelin-starred chef
Clare Smyth on an episode of
With Love, Meghan. Despite consisting of only four ingredients, the chips were surprisingly expensive to make — and ultimately cost way more than their store-bought counterparts.

On the second season of
With Love, Meghan, Meghan Markle and Clare Smyth showed viewers how easy it is to whip up some crisps in your own kitchen. But according to Silvana Franco, the cost of the ingredients is steep. The former
Suits actress fried the russet potatoes in peanut oil, which is 5.60 pounds ($7.55). Instead of using liquid vinegar, Meghan decided to use white vinegar powder. Franco could not find the item, so she used apple cider vinegar powder, which cost her 16.80 pounds ($22.64). The final ingredient is regular table salt. "If you are not going to make these very often, I'm not sure it would be worth the effort of buying all the ingredients, especially when you can get a packet of these as easy as anything," the journalist
said.

Meghan Markle first faced criticism for the crisps when she shared a picture of the sliced
potatoes cooking in oil on Instagram. "New season of
With Love, Meghan August 26 on Netflix," the mother of two wrote over the photo before joking, "Dare I say, 'It's all that… and a bag of chips.'" One X user commented, "This isn't new, exciting or inventive. I tried making chips with my kids 30 years ago." A second critic wrote, "Ok I get it they're still being cooked and not yet browned, but potato chips? I think we ALL can make potato chips. Is this and pasta the extent of her cooking skills? Thus far I've seen nothing she's made that I'd want to try."

While many people like to troll Meghan Markle over her lifestyle tips,
Netflix seems to have full confidence in the California native and her husband,
Prince Harry. The company recently extended their deal with the royal couple. "We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As Ever brand," the former actress announced. "My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision."
