King Charles III and Queen Camilla attended the Braemar Gathering in Scotland just two days after Katharine, Duchess of Kent died at 92. While Charles wore a black vest, tie and jacket with a traditional tartan kilt, Camilla donned a long blue coat over a green tartan skirt. She accessorized with a colorful scarf, a green hat and a small black armband to apparently pay her respects to Katharine.

Royal watchers on X criticized Queen Camilla for breaking protocol and compared her unfavorably to Kate Middleton and Sophie Wessex, who were both spotted upholding the mourning period tradition of wearing black clothing during official engagements following the death of Katharine, Duchess of Kent. "Why isn't The Queen wearing black today? Anyone know?" asked one X user. "I think Balmoral Tartan with a black coat would have been a perfect choice," said another.

"I see a black armband, but a black dress would have been better. This doesn't look good," one X user commented of Queen Camilla's ensemble. Yet another X user argued, "She is dressed appropriately (in my humble opinion). Everyone is getting offended by everything."
_
One X account speculated that protocol could be different because Katharine, Duchess of Kent wasn't a working royal when she died. "The Duchess was not a working Royal so maybe official mourning wear isn't required. Yes, unofficially, it would be nice," the X user acknowledged.

Buckingham Palace released a statement announcing the death of Katharine, Duchess of Kent. "It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent. Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family," it read.

"The king and queen and all members of the royal family join the Duke of Kent, his children and grandchildren in mourning their loss and remembering fondly the duchess' life-long devotion to all the organizations with which she was associated, her passion for music and her empathy for young people," the statement concluded.
