When an 85-year-old patient named
Jacqueline Page told King Charles III that she was "wearing out" in her old age, His Majesty reportedly
replied, "I know. This is the terrible thing, as I'm discovering already — the bits don't work so well after you get past 70, do they?"

King Charles III — who announced in early 2024 that he'd been diagnosed with cancer — also spoke with a patient battling prostate cancer. "I'm very sorry about that, it's so frustrating," His Majesty
told Matthew Shinda. "Half the problem is detecting it, isn't it, in time. The great thing, I think, is they're getting better and better at dealing with these things. The trouble is there's always hope down the road."

In February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer after he underwent a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. "During the king's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," the statement read. "His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake state business and official paperwork as usual. The king is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible."
