A petition calling for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to be dropped from the royal line of succession — he's currently eighth in line to the British throne — gathered nearly 30,000 signatures in just a few days, Britain's
Daily Express reported. The petition was launched the same day the former Duke of York was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Petition author Joel Boissevain said the controversy surrounding the former Prince Andrew raises serious questions about the future of the monarchy. "We find ourselves at a critical juncture where the integrity of the British monarchy is being scrutinized due to serious allegations against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor," Boissevain wrote. "These allegations involve heinous crimes against women and girls, prompting questions about the suitability of his position in the royal line of succession," the author added, referring to claims made by late Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, who accused the former Duke of York of assaulting her in 2001, which he's denied. "Such situations become further untenable now that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested by the police for alleged misconduct in public office," Boissevain continued.

Petition author Joel Boissevain further wrote that the petition is not just about "lineal sequence" but about "preserving the dignity and integrity of the institution that represents the Commonwealth realms." Allowing someone facing such severe allegations to remain in line for the throne, the author added, "despite the improbability of succession, casts a shadow over not only the royal family but also the governments of the Commonwealth under which the monarchy functions."

Renewed scrutiny comes as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor faces mounting legal trouble. In February, the former Duke of York — whose royal titles were stripped by his brother King Charles III in late 2025 amid fresh attention on his ties to predator Jeffrey Epstein — was arrested weeks after the U.S. Justice Department released emails suggesting he had passed along sensitive government documents to the disgraced financier while serving as a trade envoy.

A new YouGov poll found that 82 percent of Britons believe Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor should be removed from the line of succession, while just six percent said he should remain.
