Being in London has proven to be much more than Missy Franklin's chance to rub elbows with the royals. In fact, on Monday, the 17-year-old Team USA rookie earned her first gold medal!
During day four of the 2012 London Olympics, the teen swimmer won the women's 100-meter backstroke event by clocking in at 58.33 seconds. Australian swimmer Emily Seebohm, 20, took second with 58.68 while Japan's Aya Terakawa, 27, nabbed third place with a time of 58.83.
Even more impressive was that her winning race occurred just 10 minutes after coming in eighth and securing the final qualifying spot in the 200m freestyle semifinals; the event's finals take place Tuesday evening.
For Franklin, who hails from Pasadena, Calif., this summer's Games will hopefully bring her more than medals.
"I want to ride a double-decker bus and meet One Direction, Prince William and Kate Middleton," the high school senior tells Us Weekly. "I am in love with all of them!"
