Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney starred in the first film alongside Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett as best friends Julianne and Michael, who promised during their college years that they'd marry each other if they hadn't married anyone else by the time they turn 28. Things get complicated when Michael falls in love and gets engaged, forcing Julianne to fight to prove she is his true mate.

Dermot Mulroney told the New York Post he didn't know a sequel had been confirmed. "I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote," he said.

Dermot Mulroney went on to praise My Best Friend's Wedding leading lady Julia Roberts. "Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream," he gushed of making the 1997 rom-com, which reportedly earned $300 million at the global box office. "All of Hollywood knew it was going to be an exceptional movie," he added. "I knew [it was going to be a hit] — even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys and I got the role."
