Nikki Bella is publicly apologizing after a 2013 video resurfaced that shows her calling late female wrestler Joanie "Chyna" Laurer a "man."
The comment came while Nikki and her twin sister, Brie, appeared on "Fashion Police," which was hosted by the late Joan Rivers. In the clip, the Bellas were asked to comment on Chyna's looks. Nikki said, "We don't know if it's a man or a woman."
Over the weekend, the video was making the rounds on social media, and cancel culture began to rear its head. On July 28, Nikki addressed the video.
"I want to sincerely apologize for a comment I made over 8 years ago on Fashion Police. I am sorry and embarrassed by my 29 year old self, who offended Chyna and, in turn, hurt her family and others," Nikki wrote on Twitter. "I wish I could take it back. Please learn from me, it's not worth hurting someone's feelings for a meaningless laugh."
She continued, "Chyna will always be remembered as an icon and pioneer who helped create the opportunities for women in wrestling that exist today. Thank you Chyna!"
Chyna, who wrestling fans dubbed "The Ninth Wonder of the World," passed away in 2016 of an overdose.
While Nikki is taking the brunt of the online criticism, Joan would have likely taken heat, too, if she were alive.
After Nikki's comment, Joan, who passed away in 2014, said, of Chyna, "To say she's butch, I hate to say that, but her vagina has a penis."
Joan's comment got roaring laughter from others on the "Fashion Police" panel, including Kelly Osbourne and George Kotsiopoulos.
Chyna was a trailblazer in WWE and the professional wrestling industry, becoming the first woman to win WWE's Intercontinental championship and the first woman to enter the Royal Rumble. She often wrestled against male stars, something rarely seen anymore.
