Did D. Woods say thanks, but no thanks? After four of the five-member girl group Danity Kane were photographed lunching together in Los Angeles on Monday, May 13, fans were left wondering why Woods, who has been busy with her own solo career, was noticeably absent.
"We asked D. Woods to come but then again, everybody has their place and their time and that's okay," fellow member Dawn Richard said in a recent interview with Pacific Rim Video. "I think it was great for us to meet, and there's love all around. We're too grown for it not to be. …What the focus needs to be on is not who didn't show up, but the fact that after six years, the monumental response that came from it."
Richard dined with her former Danity Kane collaborators Shannon Bex, Aubrey O'Day and Aundrea Fimbres at their much-buzzed about reunion, and the foursome focused on the positive, she said.
"We ate, we walked out and we didn't realize how powerful it was," Richard continued. "We had no clue and I think we never realized it. We were so busy trying to be great and have our focus and have our business together that I don't think we [got it]."
The former Diddy-managed girl group first formed in 2005 after the music mogul launched their careers on MTV's Making the Band. The women would go on to put out two certified platinum albums, 2006's Danity Kane and 2008's Welcome to the Dollhouse.
Tensions arose after O'Day, 29, was kicked out of the group in 2009, however, and Diddy's supposed favoritism toward Richard led to the band's dissolution later that year.
Since then, Woods, 27, has released her own mixtapes and EPs independently of her former band members, leading to a rift between her and the other four singers.
"There was a lot of outstanding issues an obviously that was the only way it could be resolved," she told Hollyscoop of disbanding the group. "And I know that I did my very best in the situation … But if your services are not being appreciated, you gotta take it elsewhere."
In the Pacific Rim Video interview, Richard expressed similar hopes to move forward.
"[D. Woods] is great. Let the girl be," she said. "Whatever people choose, let them live in their moment. If they feel like they be queen, let them live. Like, that's okay to say, 'No.' Damn, like I think we gotta chill out. We be doing the most. If that's her choice, then that's her choice and that's cool but moving on."
