"Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life," the "Dancing With the Stars" hoofer tells E! News. "But hopefully we can move on."
(Don't forget, this is a woman who wore a fancy swimsuit to the Emmy Awards, so she's not unfamiliar with dim-bulb decisions.)
According to Derek, his little sister is "mortified" by the backlash over her decision to dress up as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren from "Orange Is the New Black," complete with skin-darkening makeup, hair poufs and a faux orange prison jumpsuit.
"She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever. She is just beyond beside herself," explains Derek. "She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry, and I just hope that we can all forgive her and move on."
Julianne, who seemed quite pleased with her outfit when she was photographed in it on Oct. 25, issued her own mea culpa in the wake of the controversy.
"I am a huge fan of the show, 'Orange Is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba and the character she has created," she said. "It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people, and I truly apologize."
Meanwhile, one of Aduba's castmates has weighed in on the blackface commotion.
"I wasn't offended," "Orange" star Laverne Cox tells Us. "I thought it was a shame that she is in this country, that she would wear blackface and not understand the historical implications of that. I don't think Julianne is making a specific informed choice to comment on blackness. I just think it's out of this ignorance. That's really sad."
