Never underestimate the emotional support a dog can provide during tough times. In the wake of Melanie Griffith's split from Antonio Banderas after 18 years of marriage, TMZ says she's determined to win custody of their trio of tail-waggers.

Sources say the actress considers herself the better pooch parent to their terrier mix and two shepherd lab mixes, and they "mean the world to her."

The stars adopted the abused and abandoned brother-sister shepherd lab pups in February 2013 after two of their dogs passed away.

So far, Melanie and Antonio's divorce has seemed amicable, with the two releasing a statement that they are ending their romance "in a loving manner honoring and respecting each other." Griffith has also continued to wear her wedding ring and flash her "Antonio" arm tattoo.

Other than the dogs, they shouldn't have any other custody issues: Their daughter, Stella, turns 18 in September.

According to People, the pair "have had issues for years," and the "fights and separations got to be too much."
