Shailene Woodley and friend Miles Teller have a long friendship ahead of them -- at least, that's what the The Fault In Our Stars actress is hoping for. In the July 2014 issue of Vanity Fair, the 22-year-old actress compares the pair's platonic friendship to George Clooney and Julia Roberts, the time she almost quit acting, and much more.
"I'm never going to say never. I love acting, but I also really love nature and most actors don't want to get dirty," the cover star tells the mag on whether she'd date a costar. "I look at Miles and, like, I'm sort of Julia Roberts in the same way she is to George. Their relationship I could see being our relationship in 20 years, and that really is special."
Woodley and Teller, 27, first shared the big screen together in 2013's coming-of-age film The Spectacular Now. They continued working together in the blockbuster smash Divergent, and are currently filming its sequel, Insurgent. Woodley's entrance into Hollywood's bonafide A-list arguably began with her role as Clooney's complicated daughter in Oscar-winning film The Descendants back in 2011. Despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination for her work, the Secret Life of the American Teenager alum was close to quitting Hollywood after production wrapped.
"Somebody came to me and said, 'I can't wait to see what you do next.' I took that as pressure—that I had to live up to somebody else's expectations," she recalled to Vanity Fair. "There were a few months where I was like, 'I don't want to act anymore.' And then I got over it and realized it's none of my business what other people think of me."
Since then, Clooney has continued to play somewhat of a mentor role for her. "He has been an angel in my life for many reasons," she said of Clooney. "He knew everyone's name on set. He treated everyone as an equal and everyone got his warmth."
Clooney, for his part, was just as impressed with the young star. "Shailene can do whatever she wants. If she wants to be a movie star, she has it. If she wants to change the world, she will. Her talent and kindness go hand in hand," the 53-year-old told Vanity Fair. "We'll be talking about Shailene Woodley 40 years from now. I've never seen anyone so young that has so much together."
Woodley's perseverance may have something to do with that. Following The Descendants, the actress bounced right back after her Mary Jane role got cut last June from this year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2. "For a few hours it was literally like, 'Oh, my God, was I awful? Why did they cut me? What are people going to think?'" she said of the audition. "I woke up the next morning and I was like, 'O.K., it makes total sense.' I'm a pretty spiritual person, so I can just sit back and trust that everything happens for a reason, even if my ego doesn't like it."
