During the Sunday, February 16, episode of Face the Nation, Brennan questioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the second-in-command's speech to the Munich Security Conference in Germany, where he called out European allies for their "soviet-like approach to censorship."
"What did all of this accomplish, other than irritating our allies?" the journalist questioned about Vance's remarks.
"What did all of this accomplish, other than irritating our allies?" the journalist questioned about Vance's remarks.
"Why would our allies or anybody be irritated by free speech and by someone giving their opinion? We are, after all, democracies," Rubio replied. "The Munich Security Conference is largely a conference of democracies in which one of the things that we cherish and value is the ability to speak freely and provide your opinions. And so, I think if anyone's angry about his words, they don't have to agree with him, but to be angry about it, I think actually makes his point."
"Well, he was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide," Brennan spat back. "He met with the head of a political party that has far-right views and some historic ties to extreme groups. The context of that was changing the tone of it. And you know that."

Vance was outraged by the comment, writing, "This is a crazy exchange. Does the media really think the Holocaust was caused by free speech?"
Other people chimed in under the message, adding, "American education at its best right here. She needs a history lesson."
"No. The left media doesn't really believe it. They are just hoping their audience believes it," a second person added.

"Where did she come up with this? Concerning and very odd," another chimed in.
White House communication director Steven Cheung also issued a statement about the matter. "Margaret Brennan of CBS News is going through some bizarre episode as she makes disgusting excuses for Nazis and the Holocaust," he said.

Following Brennan's remark during the interview, she and Rubio continued to spar intensely over the topic. "I have to disagree with you," the former senator from Florida said as the two spoke over each other. "Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide. The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime that happened to also be genocidal because they hated Jews and they hated minorities and they had a list of people they hated, but primarily the Jews."
"There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none. There was also no opposition in Nazi Germany. They were the sole and only party that governed that country. So that's not an accurate reflection of history," Rubio explained.
