Speaker of the House
Mike Johnson is speaking out against what he calls the "pittance" of a 20-year prison sentence for convicted trafficker
Ghislaine Maxwell. "I think she should have a life sentence at least," said Johnson, who serves as a top ally to President
Donald Trump.

Following news that Ghislaine Maxwell was granted limited immunity, Mike Johnson doubled down on his demand for a harsher sentence during a sit-down on Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. Maxwell, who recently gave a series of interviews, is under a new deal in which her answers can't be used against her in court. Johnson, seemingly unsupportive of the immunity, said there were "probably well over 1,000 victims," calling her actions "evil."

After President Donald Trump publicly wished Ghislaine Maxwell "well," Speaker Mike Johnson shared his disapproval. "It's hard to put into words how evil this was, and that she orchestrated it and was a big part of it, at least under the criminal sanction, I think is an unforgivable thing," he said. "So again, not my decision, but I have great pause about that, as any reasonable person would."

Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted in 2021 for crimes connected to her role in Jeffrey Epstein's trafficking ring — and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Mike Johnson was asked if he believes Maxwell "can be trusted" following interviews with Deputy Attorney General Tom Blanche. "I hope so. I hope that she would want to come clean. We certainly are interested in knowing everything that she knows," he said. "If she wants to come clean now, that would be a great service to the country, and we'd like to know every single bit of information that she has. I certainly hope she's telling the truth."
