King Felipe has personal ties to both Greece and Denmark: His mother, Queen Sofia, was born Princess Sofia of Greece and Denmark in Athens. Sofia later renounced her titles and converted to Catholicism when she married into the Spanish royal family.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima have a long history with King Felipe and Queen Letizia, whose oldest child, daughter Princess Catharina-Amalia, studied in Spain after facing kidnapping threats in the Netherlands. At a 2024 state banquet Willem-Alexander and Maxima hosted for Felipe and Letizia, the king of the Netherlands gushed of the Spanish royals offering sanctuary to his daughter: "This was made possible by the kind efforts of many of your compatriots and yourselves. A touching demonstration of friendship at a difficult time. I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks to you and everyone else who helped arrange this" he said.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia's trip with their daughters comes as Princess Leonor continues to prioritize her military training, which takes a total of three years. Leonor is the heir to the Spanish throne and is training to follow in her father's footsteps.
