Prince William's relationship was greatly impacted by the Duke of Sussex's explosive memoir,
Spare. He and the Prince of Wales haven't been seen together since
King Charles III's
2023 coronation ceremony. According to their mother Princess Diana's biographer, the rift between the duo isn't just a tragedy for the royal siblings but for the entire monarchy.

Prince Harry left the royal fold in 2020, the Duke of Sussex often attended royal gatherings alongside
Prince William. They presented a clear vision of the monarchy's future, but now that vision has changed. "We all remember the days when Harry and William were joshing with one another, and it all seemed set for their relationship and the future — that Harry, as Diana always used to say, would be William's wingman,"
Andrew Morton, who is Princess Diana's biographer, told
People, adding that the rift between the brothers is "a great loss for the monarchy."

Prince Harry took a potshot at
Prince William's "alarming" baldness and painted the future king as violent. The duke also threw jabs at William's marriage to
Kate Middleton on the 2022 docuseries
Harry & Meghan, on which he said that the men in the royal family typically marry "someone who would fit the mold." Observed Andrew Morton, "Things were said that sparked the initial rift, and it's never healed."

Royal expert
Robert Lacey predicted that
Prince William and
Prince Harry's rift will be permanent. "The rift is very profound and very long-lasting. It will not be changed, in my opinion, until Harry makes a move and apologizes," Lacey told
People. "Everyone wants it to happen on their terms, but that's what makes it impossible," historian
Amanda Foreman noted, referencing the Duke of Sussex's public statement that he's interested in reconciling with his family but not participating in the "institution" that is the monarchy.

Prince Harry's relationship remains on ice, the siblings continue to protect and advocate for Princess Diana's legacy. The former Princess of Wales took her sons to local shelters and was an advocate for HIV/AIDS patients. Both the Duke of Sussex and the Prince of Wales have taken on non-profit opportunities aligned with their late mother's humanitarian work. William is working to end homelessness in the U.K., and Harry often advocates for children with HIV/AIDS in the Southern Africa.
