According to royal expert Jennie Bond, Donald Trump's ongoing threats to buy Greenland are putting pressure on King Charles III to cancel his upcoming visit to the United States. "I think we are fortunate to have a King so well-versed in diplomatic skills, because Donald Trump has made the role of the monarch trickier than ever," she told The Mirror. "Because the President is so enamored with British royalty, and so hopelessly flattered by any attention he's given by the royal family, they have become key players in the so-called special relationship between the U.S. and Britain."_
Even if King Charles III wants to nix the trip, the decision is not up to him. "You have to remember that the King acts on the wishes of the government. So, the decision about any state visit to America is entirely dependent on what the Prime Minister [Keir Starmer] and his government wants," Jennie Bond said._
With Prince William also scheduled to be in America this year, a lot is riding on King Charles' meeting with Donald Trump. "I think it's highly unlikely that the government would cancel the visit, even though it has not yet been confirmed. And if Charles and Queen Camilla go, then there's no reason to think that William would not also go over for the World Cup," Jennie Bond said. "I'm sure life would be a whole lot easier if Charles and Camilla were told there was no need for them to go to the United States. But deploying the soft power of the monarchy is an important part of their job. So, if they are told to go, go they must — and I'm sure they will make a very good job of it. But it's not one that many people would envy them for."_
Many British politicians are calling for King Charles III to cancel his trip across the pond due to Donald Trump's threats to take Greenland. U.K. Parliament member Simon Hoare took to X to write, "The upcoming state visit of HM The King to the U.S. must now be cancelled. The civilized world can deal with Trump no longer. He is a gangster pirate.""The Prime Minister must tell Trump in no uncertain terms: if he goes ahead with these outrageous tariffs and keeps bullying Greenland, there'll be no state visit to the U.S. in April. The U.K. must not be a doormat for an extortionist, or reward Trump's behavior with the pageantry he craves," Parliament member Ed Davey wrote on X.
