No 7. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (in theaters on July 25)
Pedro Pascal is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The former star of The Mandalorian, The Last of Us and Game of Thrones is stepping into another major sci-fi franchise with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, alongside Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Vanessa Kirby. The film follows four heroes as they team up to stop Galactus — a cosmic god intent on destroying Earth. If you're into superhero blockbusters, this is one you won't want to miss.
No 6. I Know What You Did Last Summer (in theaters on July 18)
The iconic '90s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer is making a comeback — this time with a new star-studded cast and a few familiar faces. The story once again follows a group of friends whose deadly car accident leads to a pact of silence. However, when someone finds out what they did last summer, the past comes back with a vengeance. This new installment mirrors the original, with two survivors of the infamous 1997 Southport Massacre (Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.) returning to help a new generation played by Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King and more.
No 5. Eddington (in theaters on July 18)
Pedro Pascal is keeping busy this summer, starring in another film set to release midway through the month. The story unfolds during the COVID-19 pandemic and centers on a tense standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor. Though the film hasn't hit theaters yet, early reviews are starting to roll in — with mixed reactions.
Rolling Stone described it as "
Ari Aster's blend of social satire, suspense, and 21st-century paranoia [that] still feels way too close for comfort," while one top critic on
Rotten Tomatoes wrote, "It's clever, serrated, and not bad, but you wouldn't call it Aster at full mad tilt."
No 4. Sovereign (in theaters on July 11)
If you're a fan of crime dramas, you'll want to grab your tickets for
Sovereign. Inspired by true events, the film stars
Nick Offerman and
Jacob Tremblay as a father and son united by an anti-establishment worldview. As they travel across the country delivering self-taught legal seminars and opposing the system, their journey puts them on a collision course with a local police chief, sparking a tragic chain of events.
Sovereign has earned an impressive 80% fresh rating on
Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics already praising its compelling storytelling.
No 3. Smurfs (in theaters on July 18)
Rihanna is trading the recording studio for the big screen in the animated film Smurfs. She voices Smurfette, who leads the other Smurfs on an adventurous mission into the real world to rescue Papa Smurf (voice of John Goodman) from the evil wizards Gargamel and Razamel.
No 2. Superman (in theaters on July 11)
Did you really think nine Superman movies were enough — not counting the animated ones? Well, think again! A new film is on the way, and fans of the beloved franchise are gearing up for a fresh take on the iconic hero. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, navigating the challenge of reconciling his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing in this new chapter.
No 1. Jurassic World Rebirth (in theaters on July 2)
Topping the list is a film from a beloved franchise. The Jurassic Park reboot series began in 2015 and has since released three sequels, with a fourth installment arriving this month. Jurassic World Rebirth is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion, in a world where dinosaurs survive only in isolated habitats. The story follows Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) as she leads a team on a secret mission to gather genetic material from prehistoric creatures to develop a life-saving drug. During their journey, they uncover a hidden island home to dangerous new dinosaurs including a six-limbed T. rex. Whether you're a dinosaur fan or not, just the chance to see what a six-limbed T. rex might look like makes this film worth watching.
