Greene Revives Long-Debunked Obama Conspiracy

Marjorie Taylor Greene reignited the thoroughly debunked "birther" conspiracy about former President
Barack Obama this week, amplifying false claims that his birth certificate was fraudulent. Greene took to X to share an outdated video from 2016, originally featuring former Arizona Sheriff
Joe Arpaio, who alleged —without evidence — that Obama's birth certificate was forged.
Despite the conspiracy being widely discredited, Greene excitedly reposted the video, writing, "Oohhh this is great!!"
Her endorsement of the baseless claim follows a pattern of promoting conspiracy theories, from
QAnon to her past assertion that the 2018 Parkland school shooting was a "false flag" operation.

A History of Fringe Theories and Controversy
Greene has built her political persona on embracing and amplifying misinformation. From denying evolution to spreading QAnon conspiracies, her rhetoric has often drawn condemnation from both sides of the political spectrum.
In 2021, she was stripped of her House committee assignments due to inflammatory social media posts, including ones where she endorsed violence against Democratic lawmakers. More recently, she has confused the Gestapo — the Nazi secret police — with gazpacho, the Spanish cold soup, in a widely mocked interview.
Despite these controversies, Greene continues to hold influence in right-wing circles, using her platform to push narratives long dismissed by experts and fact-checkers.
Greene's Role in DOGE and Misinformation Campaigns
As chairwoman of the DOGE Subcommittee, Greene now plays a key role in the
Elon Musk-led initiative, which has faced scrutiny for promoting misleading claims about uncovering government "fraud."
DOGE proponents have already made numerous false assertions, mirroring Greene's history of embracing conspiracy theories. With her new position, concerns have been raised about how she may use her influence to further spread disinformation under the guise of government oversight.
While her latest post about Obama's birth certificate may be an old lie, it highlights her continued efforts to give oxygen to debunked and racist conspiracies.
