Does Donald Trump have a solid trade strategy?Following the president's meeting with Canada's prime minister, Mark Carney, where Trump tried to give an explanation for the tariffs imposed on our neighbors to the North, CNN's Maggie Haberman claimed the right-winger may not have a well-thought out plan when it comes to America's economy.

During a Tuesday, May 6, appearance on Anderson Cooper's AC360 on CNN, the journalist asked Maggie Haberman what Donald Trump is hoping to accomplish when it comes to the tariffs situation."No. I'm not sure that it's clear to him what kind of actual, specific outcome he's looking for, other than one where the U.S. can say we're on top and somebody else is not," she claimed. "Whatever the outcome is with Canada, with most of these other trading partners, it will look like some kind of a framework of a deal. And Trump will say, 'We won. This is what I wanted.' It won't be an actual trade deal to the point you made earlier. Those take months and sometimes years to hammer out. He will take some kind of off-ramps, but I don't think that he knows exactly what he wants to see, other than a headline that says success."

During the meeting between the two leaders, Mark Carney set Donald Trump straight about the trade relationship between the United States and Canada, which put the ex-reality star on the defense."We don't really want cars from Canada," The Apprentice star said. "We put tariffs on cars from Canada. At a certain point, it won't make economic sense for Canada to build those cars. We really don't want Canadian steel and we don't want Canadian aluminum and various other things, because we want to be able to do it ourself."
Carney also responded to Trump's threat to make Canada America's 51st state. "As you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale," the former economist made clear.

Maggie Haberman isn't the only pundit calling out Donald Trump for how he's handling the economy. Fox Business personality Charles Payne slammed the tariffs placed on other countries and pointed out how they will harm United States citizens."Obviously, no one wants or hopes that this is going to be the case this time around," he explained during a Tuesday, April 22, guest appearance on Special Report. "But if you come up every other day, 'Yeah, we just had a great call with so and so, and these guys,' it starts to take away credibility. It starts to smack of desperation and we just don't necessarily need it. The American public wants this White House just to level with us."

With all of the criticism lodged against him, Donald Trump took to Truth Social to defend the economy and blame former President Joe Biden for any bumps in the road."I was able to get down the costs. But even that, it takes a while to get them down, but we got them down good. We lost five to six billion dollars a day with Biden," the current commander-in-chief said during a Sunday, May 4, interview with NBC's Meet the Press.
Trump doubled down on blaming his fellow leader in a Truth Social update. "Our Country will boom, but we have to get rid of the Biden 'Overhang,'" he penned. "This will take a while, has NOTHING TO DO WITH TARIFFS, only that he left us with bad numbers, but when the boom begins, it will be like no other. BE PATIENT!!!"
