Donald Trump discussed Zohran Mamdani's historic win on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures on Sunday, June 29: "He's a communist. I think it's very bad for New York," he said. "I can't imagine it, but let's say this: If he does get in, I'm going to be president and he is going to have to do the right thing — or they're not getting any money." Trump, who is originally from Queens, built a name for himself as a successful real estate developer in Manhattan, but he has since relocated to Florida and Washington, D.C. Despite not being a New York resident, the president has been vocal about Mamdani's political progression.

In an interview with MSNBC's Meet the Press, Zohran Mamdani addressed Donald Trump's accusations that he is a communist: "No, I am not," he said when asked if he identifies as a communist. "And I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I'm from, who I am — ultimately because he wants to distract from what I'm fighting for."

Zohran Mamdani later noted that the population he is advocating for is the same one that Donald Trump targeted during his campaign: "I'm fighting for the very working people that he ran a campaign to empower, that he has since then betrayed," he said. "And when we talk about my politics, I call myself a democrat socialist in many ways inspired by the words of [Martin Luther King Jr.] from decades ago who said, 'Call it democracy or call it democratic socialism. There has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of God's children in this country.'"
