The Grammys have a long history of highlighting social causes, and this year was no different. During best New Artist winners Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's performance of their hit song turned marriage-equality anthem "Same Love," 33 gay and straight couples tied the knot on live television while Queen Latifah officiated. Joining them was Madonna -- in an all-white suit accessorized with a cane and cowboy hat -- who joined in on the song after singing a little bit of her hit "Open Your Heart."
Ryan Lewis called the move "the ultimate statement of equality" in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. But it was also a deeply personal moment for the producer: Ryan's sister Laura and her fiance Alex were among the couples saying "I do." "To have my sister get married and my family there watching it," he added, "that makes it a whole other level of amazing."
