While on stage, Shane Gillis joked about Donald Trump's hope to host an UFC fight at the White House.Gillis' punchline was "the last time he staged a fight in D.C., Mike Pence almost died."
The January 6 riot comment received scattered applause from the audience.
"You don't have to do that. It was fine, I didn't write it," Gillis told the unimpressed crowd.

Joy Behar, who has decades of experience on daytime television and stand-up comedy, said she didn't like that Shane Gillis blamed the writers' room for his poorly received joke."Never do that," she said on The View. "Johnny Carson was on the air for, I don't know, a 100 years? Never once did he say, 'The writer wrote that bad joke that I just bombed with.' That's bad form."

Whoopi Goldberg hosted the Academy Awards four times and noted how important the opening monologue is."The first five minutes is for you, whoever the host is," Goldberg explained. "The first five minutes of any awards show is for you, to get to know the audience, and the rest of that time, people want to know 'Did I win?'"

While Shane Gillis' commentary landed flat with his audience, Alyssa Farah Griffin noted how he has a unique sense of humor."I think Shane Gillis is very funny, but I watch him like I watch horror movies, like this," Griffin said. "Because I'm like, what is he going to say, is he going to make me deeply uncomfortable, or am I going to laugh hysterically?"
