According to data collected in 2024 by the National Centre for Social Research, one in three people (31%) believe the monarchy is not important. This number is up from one in 10 in 1983.More than half (58%) of the public claimed they preferred retaining the monarchy. However, 38% said they would like an elected head of state instead.
The data also showed older citizens favor the royal family, while young people would rather see officials who are voted in.

Despite low approval levels, National Centre for Social Research Director Alex Scholes thinks The Firm is here to stay — for now."Support for the monarchy is now at its lowest level since our records began, with more people than ever questioning its future. At the same time, when asked to choose directly, a majority of the public still prefer to keep the monarchy over moving to an elected head of state," the specialist claimed. "This tension, between declining importance and continued preference, will be crucial in shaping debates about the monarchy's role in the years ahead."

The release of the survey comes as King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host controversial United States President Donald Trump at Windsor Castle in the coming weeks. This will be the Republican's second state visit to England."He's a beautiful man, a wonderful man," Trump gushed over the former Prince of Wales in front of the press. "We look forward to being there and honoring the king and honoring your country. Your country is a fantastic country and it'll be our honor to be there."
