At Princess Eugenie and
Jack Brooksbank's wedding in 2018, Meghan Markle and
Prince Harry told a select group of people they were expecting their first child. According to royal authors
Omid Scobie and
Carolyn Durand, the
situation "did not go down particularly well" with the bride or her mother, Sarah Ferguson.

When Kensington Palace announced Meghan Markle and
Prince Harry were having a baby, Sarah Ferguson appeared to shade the couple by taking to X to share multiple posts about Princess Eugenie's nuptials — and not their pregnancy news.

Prince Harry opened up about his cousin's big day in his memoir,
Spare. "[Princess] Eugenie was getting married, to Jack [Brooksbank] and we were deliriously happy for them and for ourselves, selfishly, since Jack was one of our favorite people," he wrote. "Meghan [Markle] and I were supposed to head off on our first official foreign tour as a married couple, but we delayed the departure several days, so we could be at the wedding. Also, the various gatherings connected to the wedding would give us a chance to pull aside family members one by one and tell them our good news."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle told
King Charles III about the pregnancy "at Windsor, just before a drinks reception for the bride and groom." Wrote the Duke of Sussex in
Spare, "He was delighted to learn that he was going to be a grandfather for a fourth time. His wide smile warmed me."
