Axelrod took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday, February 9, to discuss his thoughts.
"A year ago, Biden refused the traditional Super Bowl interview and the unparalleled audience it would have yielded," the political consultant wrote. "That bewildering decision was a major sign of trouble. [Donald] Trump is all over it today."

Critics quickly fired back at Axelrod's comments.
"'Bewildering' lmao and you people STILL covered for him and ran him until you couldn't hide his deterioration anymore," another noted, as voters became increasingly more concerned about Biden's cognitive abilities. "That's what is truly bewildering. Happy Gulf of America Day!"
"We all know why he didn't do the interview. Stop pretending that it was a 'bewildering decision.' The debate ended any such speculation," another noted, referring to Biden's final presidential debate.

When it was first announced that Biden declined to do the presidential special, social media users thought it was indicative of a larger issue.
"Either he doesn't have anything to say or his team is worried about what he might say or how he'd say it," one person said at the time.

While at the National Prayer Breakfast, Trump threw jabs at Biden's political career.
"It's nice to once again have a president that shows up to the prayer breakfast, and that agrees to be interviewed for the Super Bowl," the reality star told the crowd on Thursday, February 6. "I'm doing that, too."
"They ask a question, and you give them an answer," Trump added. "It's not that hard."

Trump didn't stop there, as he recently mocked Taylor Swift in a Truth Social post.
"The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift," Trump wrote on Truth Social after the pop icon refused to endorse him. "She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!"
Despite the assertion, other viewers heard the audience heckle the president.
"If you thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Donald Trump got booed at the Super Bowl," someone shared on X.

In Trump's pre-Super Bowl appearance on Fox News, he explained why he chose to make history as the first sitting president to attend the sporting event.
"I thought it would be a good thing for the country to have the president be at the game," Trump stated.
