David Letterman criticized the network's approach to pulling the plug on
The Late Show in a video shared on his eponymous
YouTube channel. While the network claimed it canceled the series due to financial reasons, rumors about the decision spread due to the timing of the announcement coinciding with Stephen Colbert's criticism of Paramount's settlement with
Donald Trump. "One day — if not today — the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this are going to be embarrassed," he said. "This is gutless."

David Letterman pointed out that CBS' explanation for their decision doesn't make sense. "If they were losing that kind of money — you're telling me losing this kind of money happened yesterday?" he said, referencing the fact that The Late Show has run for nearly a decade with Stephen Colbert at the helm. "I bet they were losing this money a month ago or six weeks ago. Or they have never been losing money. They did not do the correct thing. They did not handle Stephen Colbert, the face of that network, in the way he deserves."

Donald Trump celebrated the news of Stephen Colbert's cancelation on Truth Social. "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings," he wrote. "I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC [Jimmy Fallon] who ruined the once great Tonight Show."

On an episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert reacted to Donald Trump's comments. "How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? … Go f— yourself," he said.
