Trump's Rally and Claims
During a rally in Warren, Michigan, on Tuesday, April 29, President Donald Trump revisited familiar themes, particularly his claims about the 2020 election, which have been widely debunked. His speech included repeated references to what he described as his multiple victories in Michigan over the past three presidential elections: 2016, 2020 and 2024.
CNN covered parts of the rally, and during The Lead with Jake Tapper, the fact-checking segment that followed took a somewhat humorous turn.
Here's what happened.

Trump's Election Claims
As Donald Trump recounted his electoral success in Michigan, he stated, "We just had the biggest victory in Michigan," followed by the assertion, "We won it twice… We actually won it three times… But, remember, I like the victories. I like the three victories, which we absolutely had."This bold, often-repeated claim prompted Jake Tapper to ask CNN's fact-checker, Daniel Dale, for a reaction.
Dale's Fact-Check
Daniel Dale was quick to respond, pointing out the inaccuracies in Donald Trump's statements."I think there are actual schoolchildren who could fact-check some of this for us, Jake. He lost in 2020," Dale shared, explaining that Trump lost Michigan to Joe Biden by more than 150,000 votes that year.
"If anyone is surprised that he's still lying about not only the election more than four years ago, but the election he won as he did tonight, they haven't been paying attention," he continued, adding that Trump's claims were "nonsense."
Dale concluded by noting, "No amount of fact-checking appears to deter him on this subject."
Social Media Reactions
On social media, reactions to Donald Trump's continued election claims were mixed. Some users voiced support for Trump's rhetoric, with one X commenter writing, "Trump is right — Michigan is still ours, the media won't accept it but the facts are clear!"
On the other hand, many criticized Trump's refusal to acknowledge the outcome of the 2020 election.
Another X user responded, "How many times does it take for him to stop spreading lies about 2020? It's not even funny anymore, it's just sad. You lost, but you have your 2nd term now, so grow up."
The Stage and Trump's Relationship with CNN
After Daniel Dale's fact-check, the broadcast switched to OutFront with Erin Burnett, which did not cover Trump's rally.CNN's Scott Jennings, however, was invited up on stage during the rally, where he made a joke about liberals to the conservative crowd: "Michigan, we were flying in here today, and I said, 'Look at these farms. I got a farm in Michigan because when you own as many libs as I do, you gotta get a place to put them all,'" he said.
This comment garnered some chuckles from the crowd but also drew criticism from others who pointed out its divisive nature.
The rally and its aftermath — especially the continuous false claims about a nearly five-year-old election — continue to spark conversation among both supporters and critics of the president.
