Vladimir Putin launched one of the largest attacks on Ukraine since the war began more than three years ago. The U.S. president has repeatedly urged Putin to agree to a ceasefire, but those calls have yet to lead to any real progress.

On Thursday, July 3, Russia launched more than 550 drones and missiles targeting Ukrainian cities in an overnight attack. Ahead of the strike, Russian media released details of Vladimir Putin's call with President Donald Trump. According to a summary from The Wall Street Journal's Yaroslav Trofimov, "Putin and Trump had a call, again. Per Russian readout, Trump called for a ceasefire, Putin said Russia first needs to achieve the goals of the 'special military operation,' Trump didn't object and then they talked about cooperation in promoting 'traditional values' in movies."

President Donald Trump has had numerous conversations with Vladimir Putin repeatedly asking him to end the war. However, each attempt has fallen flat, with Trump now acknowledging that the Russian leader has no intention of backing down. Trump admitted after his call with Putin that he "didn't make any progress with him today at all," adding that he's very "unhappy" with their latest conversation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly condemned the seven-hour strike, describing it as a "deliberate act of terror" that "immediately followed the call between Washington and Moscow." He added that the timing of the assault was a clear signal of "how Moscow interprets diplomacy."
